For the third time in 5 months, Nicholas Brendon, known for his role as Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was arrested. This news is very saddening, because I consider Buffy to be my favorite show and I admire the cast, Brendon's character especially. So, hearing that one of my favorite actors has gotten into trouble again made me think about addiction and its affect on Hollywood actors.

All three incidents that led to his arrest happened while attending comic book conventions like ALT*Con and ShockPop Con. His most recent arrest happened while in his hotel. According to the report, Brendon had taken nine sleeping pills before blacking out and trashing his room. This has been the overarching reason for all his arrests, damage to property while under the influence. He has made several statements, apologizing for his conduct and explaining his disease, and so far people have been very sympathetic.

Plain and simple, Nicholas Brendon suffers from an addiction to alcohol and narcotics. Unfortunately, addiction is a disease that many americans suffer with, and it is even more prevalent in Hollywood. According to one of his statements, Brendon has had depression for a long time. Depression can be both a cause and a symptom of addiction, leading to a cycle of destruction. Though I am not sure whether Brendon has sought help for his disease, I feel as though attending a rehabilitation center could put a stop to these incidents. It is clear that something needs to be done, and I don't think Nicholas Brendon should be attending cons if they act as a trigger for his behavior. Though I usually love seeing my favorite actors names in the news, I don't like it when the news is bad. I'm scared that next time I see Nicholas Brendon's name, the news will be worse.
