Over my spring break, my father and I went to see the movie Chappie. The movie, directed by Niell Blomkamp, is about a defective robot body that is implanted with artificial intelligence. However, the artificial intellegence in this cinematic universe means artificial consciousness. Essentially, when the hard drive is programmed into Chappie, he is born. Throughout the movie, we get to see Chappie grow up, evovle, and learn from his surroundings like a human, but at a much faster speed. This aspect of the film is incredible, the audience truly falls in love with Chappie, who has the innocence of a child, but the genius of having read the entire internet.
Here is the crux of the film, the main plot is really weird. This story takes place in a futuristic, but oddly 80's esque South Africa. Robots have taken the place of policemen, and yet everyone has a mullet. The main characters are street thugs who train Chappie to be ganster and do their dirty work, and then there is Hugh Jackman who is just really jealous and trying to ruin everyones lives. It all gets really strange when all the story lines (that I won't even begin to explain) converge and create one ultra-cheesy, slow motion action sequence.
At the end, my father and I were mostly just confused. But, the moral of the story? Our flesh vessels are only temporary.
I've made a graph of my opinion over the length of the movie. You can see that below. Overall, the movie was different. Not bad, not good, just different.
