How come it's so much easier to tell the internet the truth over friends (and even family)? I have so avoided the topic of my future ever since last week, when the final rejection letter made its way to my mail box. Fortunately, I'm not as bitter as I thought I'd be. I'm also not as devastated. I applied to grad school holding nothing back. This time, there was no "safe" school that I could fall back on. I figured, if I'm going to go into debt, I'm gonna go into debt at a school I actually want to be at. So I applied only to reach and dream schools whose programs rank at the top of the list.
And the consequence of that decision was that they all rejected me. But here comes the bright side: I'm not going to be in debt (in fact, I have a substantial amount saved up)! I can move to whatever city I want! I really don't need to go to grad school to succeed in the creative arts. I recently had a conversation with Ali Wong and John Mulaney (yes, the comedians and tv writers) who said that grad school actually hurts a lot of people. You have to work your way up in Hollywood, and graduating from a good film school makes a lot of people entitled. Needless to say, that made me feel a lot better.
So...here's the plan...
In Mid-August, I'm going to leave with my two best friends for the great city of Los Angeles. I'm going to try to find a job as a production assistant, writer, or even an editor at a publishing co. (because I'm really good at that). I'm also going to consider re-applying to grad schools out there, try to get a fellowship, or take UCLA's professional program, because I still need help growing as a writer.
I haven't said it out loud yet, because I'm scared! L.A. is so far away from home and I don't know if I'll be able to make it out there. When I finally have the guts to speak the words "I'm moving to L.A." I'll make sure to film it and post it up on my blog.
